Fayetteville Springfest began in 1983 by merchants on Dickson Street as a way to celebrate the history, culture, and flavor of Fayetteville. The festival quickly became a late-April staple each year featuring a pancake breakfast, lots of live music, kid-friendly activities, arts and crafts vendors and the annual “bed races” where teams of participants put together their own racing beds and wheel them up Dickson Street. After a year off last year, Springfest is back, and we think the festival will be better than ever in 2013. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 4. We hope to see you on Dickson Street! This is a unique chance to be with others in the local food movement for a day of learning and discussion with Jan Spencer of Eugene, Oregon. Jan Spencer has over 13 years of experience in developing sustainable systems including energy, water, and food on his quarter acre suburban property which has become a permaculture landmark in the Pacific Northwest. He is coming to share his knowledge and experience with the Fayetteville community and will be joined by local food enthusiasts who will share their knowledge and experience, including Trinity United Methodist Pastor, Terry Gosnell, Fayetteville City Council Member, Sarah Marsh, Author of “Building Your Ark” Lia Danks and Ozark Natural Foods Produce Manager, Pauline Thiessen. Throughout the nation people are realizing the transformative power of growing their own food. Growing our own food fosters deeper connection to each other, the natural world and the source of our food. Gardening with others promotes food security and strengthens our economic and ecological resilience. As Jan Spencer puts it “A growing number of community leaders and citizen activists recognize the importance of local food security. Creating local food security is timely, inclusive, offers a wide range of benefits and can become one of the most important community actions in Fayetteville’s history.” This event is open to the public and anyone interested in local, sustainably grown food, food security, agriculture, empowerment through gardening or community building are encouraged to attend. A $20.00 donation at the door is suggested to benefit the work of Tri Cycle Farms- Community through Soil. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. ***Special thanks to our sponsors Adventure Subaru, Ozark Natural Foods and The Little Bread Company for making this event possible!
